I see we have another post from Jeffrey Ronald Dobson. And, while I
agree that his postings are offensive and ignorant, I would urge
that we not cut him off from the list (he could, in any case, send
to the list, even though he would not have the satisfaction of
hearing the buzz or reaction against him -- or is there a way to
lockout a sender?).
What can be gained from silencing Dobson? Nothing. Unless he
posts so frequently that the bulk of his postings begins to
become a kind of list harrassment, I think the best thing to
do with his postings is to simply delete them.
On another level, there is something to be concerned about --
and that is the education system which has produced Dobson,
who is certainly not alone (his soul-mates pop up with alarming
frequency in my classes). To comdemn feminists as "Nazis"
without knowing how to speel the word -- that should say
something about the new wave of reactionary thought that's
out there listening to Limbaugh and looking for NEA grants
to attack (as happened with the "Tongues Untied" video).
Dobson's attack is also interesting in that he accuses the
authors of the call for papers of a kind of fascism, whereas
if he was familar with recent work in political theory and
film studies, he would easily see that they're Marxists.
I'm not sure which is worse, Dobson's ignorance or his
hatred, but in either case, I think absolutely nothing can
be gained by silencing him, except the false sense that
by tuning out hatred, we have somehow 'solved' it.
