It might also be worth mentioning that he used "synthesized" bird
sounds throughout the film to add to the eerie effect.  In Truffaut's
interview book with Hitchcock, the scene where Melanie Daniels in
trapped and attacked in an upstairs room near the end of the film is
noted -- Hitchcock wanted a "silent" attack and had the sound
engineers create a sound that was made up of just the fluttering of
bird wings.  Still gives me the willies everytime I see it.
