SCREEN-L amazes me and SCREEN-L disappoints me.

It's amazing to me that 681 persons (at last count) can communicate, can
exchange opinion and information, with a minimum of acrimony and friction.

And it's disappointing to me when we stray from SCREEN-L's fundamental
principles. A detailed version of those principles was posted five days
ago, but lately we seem to have lost sight of some of them. In brief:

1. Postings should show collegial respect for the opinions of others.

2. Postings should apply in some way to the study of film and television.
As we learned in our discussion of the Harding-Kerrigan Media Event, the
most productive SCREEN-L postings are ones dealing with television's
*representation of* volatile situations such as these.

3. Care should be taken in using the REPLY key (or its equivalent).
Double check that address before hitting the SEND key, and make sure that
you're sending SCREEN-L only messages that you want 681 persons to read.

Related to this: If you quote a message and if you include the original
message's "to" and "from" lines in your message, SCREEN-L will not accept
it. It's a quirk in how SCREEN-L's mailer handles addresses.

Thanks, everyone, for keeping SCREEN-L lively during the summer months.
And here I thought things were going to quiet down...
