"See the movie, read the book" as they used to say.  The docu on APPOCALYPSE
is based on Eleanor Coppola's home movies.  She published a version of her
diary of this experience several years ago, called NOTES, I believe.  It is
full of insights about the making of this film with implications about the
whole process.
