Check out the newsgroup alt.movies.visual-effects for good discussions on
a range of digitally related topics.
I'm also doing research in this area and have made numerous contacts on
the web which led to interviews down the road.  I suggest you browse the
newsgroups and CGI related pages (you can't miss with running a search on
Yahoo), as well as cinema newsgroup/webpages.  For periodicals, check out
Interactive Age, Digital Video, Wired and, most importantly, American
Cinematographer and Cinefex.  These magazines cover most of the major
elements involved with digital filmmaking technologies.
