SLAVERY IN FILM....Prof. Davis and Film  & History Editorial Board Members
                   for Buffalo, NY on 24 March, 2001.


NATALIE Z. DAVIS, one of the world's leading historians (Emerita, Princeton
University), will lead a panel discussion of her new book Slaves on Screen:
Film and Historical Vision (Harvard, 2000) on Saturday, March 24, 2001, at
a Historical Society event on the campus of Canisius College in Buffalo.
The event will begin with a luncheon at 12 noon in the Grupp Fireside
Lounge upstairs in the Winter Student Center on the campus of Canisius at
2001 Main Street in Buffalo, NY 14208. Then at 1:30 pm, the proceedings
will move next door to the Regis Room (also upstairs in the Winter Center)
for a brief talk by Professor Davis, and responses by three expert
commentators on history and film. The commentators are Dr. John E. O'Connor
of Rutgers University at Newark/New Jersey Institute of Technology, Dr.
Robert B. Toplin of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Dr.
Thomas Cripps of Morgan State University. Afterwards, there will also be a
booksigning by the author.

REGISTRATION: The fee for this event, including the luncheon, will be
$10 per person ($5 for students, adjuncts, or unemployed scholars),
payable in advance to the regional coordinator (make out checks to The
Historical Society) or at the door.

DIRECTIONS: Canisius is located in Buffalo, New York, at 2001 Main
Street. BY PLANE: Greater Buffalo and Niagara Falls International
Airport is located 15 minutes from the College. BY CAR: From East or
South: New York State Thruway (I-90) to exit #51W (Rte. 33 West).
Route 33 to Route 198, then first exit at Main Street. Left onto Main.
Campus is two blocks down on left. From Canada and North: Take I-190
(South through Grand Island, or North from Peace Bridge) to exit N-11
(Rte. 198). Route 198 to Main Street exit. Right on Main. Campus is
two blocks down on left. Parking is Old Main Lot behind Churchill
Tower, or in Ramp on Jefferson (left off Main St. at 2nd light, then
right into ramp), or in Spillman Lot (behind Health Sciences off
Delavan).

LODGING: This event was scheduled for noon in the hope that most of
those who would be inclined to attend would be able to make it a day
trip. Those planning to stay overnight in Buffalo should feel free to
contact the regional coordinator at the address below, who will be
happy to make arrangements for you.
