I would very much recommend _The Silent Star_ (_Der schweigende Stern_), a
Polish-DDR co-production that came out in 1960. Based on Stanislaw Lem's
1951 novel _The Astronauts_, it features an international crew on a
mission to Venus to decode a message found in the Gobi desert. The film
has just been made available in the US and Canada through the DEFA Film
Library based at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. A catalog
description of the film and a photo of its multi-racial cast may be found
at <http://www.umass.edu/defa/silentstar.shtml>. Hope this helps.
