The Freie Universitaet Berlin (Germany) has the pleasure to offer to you the
below mentioned film studies course which will be held at our 2nd
International Summer University(FUBiS). FUBiS will take place from July 31st
through August 27th 1999.
The language of instruction will be English.

"Berlin: A German Cinema Metropolis"

The course will examine the history and the current situation of German
film, focusing on Berlin as a major center for the film and media industry.
Beginning with the first publicly screened movies, the Skladanowsky
Brothers' film program in the "Wintergarten" variety show in 1895, we will
trace the history and evolution of German cinema production, distribution
and reception until today. Selected films and clips will illustrate
developments in film aesthetics as well as in contemporary cultural and
political contexts (Wilhelminian Germany, the Weimar Republic, National
Socialism, the immediate post-war period, the division of Germany into East
and West, the 60's and 70's, and the present). As the location of major
German studios, including UFA and DEFA, Berlin and Babelsberg will also
provide excellent examples of fundamental developments in the movie
business. The course will close with a look at current German popular films,
at the recent activity going on in the film schools, and at Berlin as a site
of TV and innovative multi-media productions. The German film industry's
position and its prospects for the future will also be considered in a
European and international context.
Excursions are planned to the Potsdam Film Museum, the Berlin Film Academy,
and a TV studio or multi-media company.
