I'm certainly nobody's favorite star, but I sometimes smoke in a scene
just to be able to smoke. It can be a real pain, though, because you have
to match all the previous shots drag for drag as per the dialogue and
action. For continuity's sake, the cigarette also has to stay the same
length which means you have to keep breaking them off and lighting them
right before "Action!" But why would the tobacco industry pay stars to
smoke unless they displayed a pack of a particular brand? Sometimes the
actor feels that smoking is simply intrinsic in a certain character's
character.
