You've given a very broad definition, I think, because the overriding factor in each of the couples (aside from King Kong and, in part, Beauty and the Beast) is that both partners, however identified, are actually very good-looking specimens -- perfect mates except for the role they are playing. But allowing for that, here's what comes to mind along the lines you suggest: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST -- a woman and a creature. LE BOUCHER -- a school teacher/headmistress and a serial killer. CAL -- a 20ish semi-soldier for the IRA and the wife of the protestant policeman he had a hand in killing. THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR -- a young widow and the ghost of a dead sea captain. I MARRIED A WITCH -- man and witch ONE TOUCH OF VENUS (see, also MANNEQUIN) -- window dresser and mannequin. OUT OF SIGHT -- bank robber and FBI agent. THE PIANO -- a 19th-century mute young widow/new bride from Scotland and a former whaler tattoed in the Maori style. PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO -- a woman and a fictional film character. PYGMALION (see, also, MY FAIR LADY) -- haughty professor and cockney flower seller. SPLASH -- a young businessman and a mermaid. STARMAN -- a woman and an alien in her husband's body. A STRANGER AMONG US -- Hasidic man and non-practicing/non-Jewish woman cop. WHITE PALACE -- mid-20s Jewish upper middle class yuppie and a 40ish non-Jewish deep blue collar waitress at a hamburger stand. WITNESS -- Amish woman and hard-boiled non-Amish cop. American television series: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST -- extended riff on relationship between the woman and the creature, without the creature's transformation into good-looking young man. BEWITCHED -- man and witch. BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER -- (Buffy and Angel) -- relationship between a teen-aged vampire slayer and a 244-year-old vampire. THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR -- more of the same I DREAM OF JEANNIE -- pilot and genie. ---- Screen-L is sponsored by the Telecommunication & Film Dept., the University of Alabama: http://www.tcf.ua.edu
