Written, scored, and directed by Charlie Chaplin, "CITY LIGHTS" is known as one of the all-time masterpieces of silent film. The film tells the story of a tramp who falls in love with a blind girl and of his hilarious hot-and-cold relationship with a drunken millionaire. Keeping true to Chaplin's original orchestrations, the BQE Project presents all of Chaplin's musical themes and subtleties in a chamber setting. Directed by Tom Nazziola (who also plays percussion), the ensemble includes pianist John Florio, violinist Lisa DeLuca, bassoonist Dan Shelley, and bassist Greg August. Seen this summer as part of "Celebrate Brooklyn!" festival in Prospect Park, this will be the final New York area screening before the film leaves circulation and returns to the Chaplin estate. (This screening and workshop is presented in cooperation with the Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College, the Brooklyn College Department of Film, Brooklyn Center Cinema, and the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, and is made possible in part through a generous grant from the Catherine Filene Shouse Foundation.)
