An International Conference on British cinema, 10-12 July, 1998 **Call for Papers** The conference will explore international dimensions of British film culture and hope to attract contributions on: * The distribution, exhibition, audiences and reception of British films in both domestic and overseas markets, and non-British films in domestic market * The idea of national cinema * Popular Genres * British fils stars, the star system and film acting * Quality film-making and British art cinema * Documentary, independent, avant-garde and experimental film theory and practice * Questions of cultural exchange (relations with Hollywood and Europe, British film-makers working in Hollywood and elsewhere, other foreign nationals working ion British cinema, representations of British and British in other national cinemas) * The development of British film culture (popular and academic publishing, magazines and journals, and critical traditions) * Film policy, cinema and the state, censorship, the organization and development of the film industry and the work of key companies and studios. * Film style and the contribution of producers, directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, art directors, costume designer, composers, and actors * Techonology * The contribution of women and ethnic minorities to the development of British cinema, and the representations of class, race, ethnicity, place, gender, sexuality and youth cultures * Relations with radio, television and other media, and relations with other cultural practices, such as literature, melodrama, music hall, popular music and television drama. Proposals for papers should be nore more than 150 words, and should arrive by 6 January, 1998.
