In regards to your "Contemporary Film Criticism" course I think your topics seem quite interesting and timely. However I do have a few comments. One respondant wrote, " but i would imagine that a course called "Contemporary Film Criticism" really owes it to those enrolled to devote at least a little attention to such issues as montage theory, the gaze, the construction of ideology via images, film as document vs. film as art, reception theory, questions of images as a language, to choose just a few issues that come immediately to mind " I would assume that any investigation of your topics would naturally engage many of these debates. The texts themselves will open up discussion and critical debate surrounding the use of the gaze, gender theory, ideology, spectatorship (etc). I do not think you have to worry about "owing" anything to your students, by organizing your course in the way you propose. While many anthologies are very helpful I would be sure to check out and/or use recent journal, magazine articles in combination with older anthologies to ensure a "contemporary" approach.
