Reading these posts about sitcoms makes one remember that only American versions of Brit sitcoms are ever shown on the major networks. Also only particular Brit sitcoms are shown on the major PBS networks. (And where does a show like Waiting for God fit in?) In the LA area only provincial PBS stations show the ancient sitcoms like Are Your Being Served? But when someone mentioned the class and sexual orientation, i.e., the music hall aspects of Brit sitcoms suddenly I realized that no one has mentioned 'Allo, 'Allo--the Queen Mum's favorite. A show only shown on small market PBS stations. It might be worthwhile to compare Hogan's Heros w/'Allo, 'Allo because AA is available over here. Comparing AA to Are You Being Served? is also helpful. But there was a long running sitcom in the UK about the high jinks in the Home Guard that was never shown here. AA was being made in the '80s. Can you imagine a US universe that would make a hit out of a WWII sitcom in the 1980s? (Mash being a Viet Nam sticom.) And what about the genre of blackout Brit comedies like Frye and Laurie and Lenny Henny? AbFab has a foot in both camps--sitcom and blackout. None of these has ever produced enough episodes to fill a 2 year US schedule. The long running sitcoms are the music hall ones.
