This year marks the third annual FilmFest Missouri - Kansas City on October 4 - 10. Dozens of showtimes citywide will entertain movie lovers with international and domestic independent subjects. Most of the films with be Kansas City premieres. The Opening Night Party will be held from 7 - 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at the historic, John Eberson-designed atmospheric (and currently under renovation), Uptown Theatre at 36th and Broadway in Kansas City, MO. Various theatres in the metroplex are participating in this exciting event. Specially-sponsored events include a VFW-sponsored screening of the Oscar-nominated "Babe" at the Plaza Theatre on Oct. 5; a festival of African Cinema sponsored by the KCMO Public Library and the African-American Film Society of Missouri; and three films sponsored by Hallmark Entertainment to be shown at the Fine Arts Theatre in Mission, KS: HBO's "Gulliver's Travels", "London Suite", and "Nightjohn" (co-sponsored by the Disney Channel). FilmFest is also a participating sponsor of the 5th Annual KAN Film Festival held at Lied Center at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. KAN features video and film entries produced by students in Kansas and Missouri. A partial list of FilmFest movies includes: "The Grass Harp" directed by Charles Matthau (Walter's son), "Augustin" a French film directed by Anne Fontaine, "Harvest Home" - Grand Prize Winner at this year's Palm Springs Film Festival, "Captives" starring Tim Roth and Julia Ormand, "Loaded" directed by Anna Campion, "The Neon Bible" directed by Terence Davies and starring Gena Rowlands, and "Mother Night" starring Nick Nolte and based on the novel by Kurt Vonnegut.
