One of my pastimes is acting. I don't mean in movies, but on the stage, both professionally and in community theatre. I used to think I was a natural actor, but I have worked with enough different directors to know that I still have an awful lot to learn (and I have been acting on stage for 40 years) The thesis that acting is an attribute rather than a learned thing to me is a dangerous one. I have shared stages with people who believed in their own talent to the extent that they were unable to do anything on stage except grandstand. Being able to act well demands humility as well as confidence. The two chief virtues of the stage are self discipline and teamwork. Unfortunately, the star system often mitigates against these qualities, promoting petulance and arrogance instead. Chris M.
