I, for one, had written off Depp's film career even before it began. I mean, if you want to talk about pretention, talk about a TV hearthrob who actually thinks he can act. Then I saw him in Water's _Cry_Baby_. I thought, "Now here's a guy who can take a risk." Depp's career is built on risks (and a few misses as a result). I am continually impressed with his choices and depth of characterization. It seems to me he's got a good thing going. He works continually. He does interesting things and he doesn't have the kind of spotlight he did as the teen idol. Now I go to most of his films because I trust his taste.
