Maarten-- Bill Nichols published a book of essays about Reality TV last year, though the title escape's me at the moment. Also, Robert Stam has a great article called "TV News and Its Spectator" in the anthology Regarding Television, which I beleive was published as BFI monograph, though I could be wrong. I think E. Ann Kaplan is one of the editors, and in the same book there's good work by Margaret Morse on the subject. Morse has another piece, I think on Talk Television--or matbe it's the one on sports-- which I think was published in Screen sometime in mid-late Eighties, and which looks kind of dated now, but is still useful. Also, Avital Ronnel (sp?) published a more theoretical and experimental, interesting piece on the Rodney King beatings in the journal differences sometime around 92. Vivian Sobchack's article "Inscribing Ethical Space: Ten Propositions on Death and Documentary" is essential in this area, if you ask me. See also Mary Ann Doane's piece in Logics of Television (anthology, Mellencamp), which is of definite conceptual importance. Miriam White's Book Tele-Advising: Therepeutic Strategies of Discourse . . . might be useful. Also, you should look at Michael Renov's anthology Theorizing Documentary (Routledge), since there are a few relevent articles in there. John Hartley and John Fiske also published a book some years ago that was important early stuff; parts of Fiske's Television Culture take up relevent programs and issues. There is a bunch of other stuff, including at least one book newly published here in the U.S. on talk TV, the name of which also currently escapes me. Nichols' bibliography, I suppose, should include at least some of it. Hope that gets you started.
