From: Tony Williams English SIUC I suppose every Hollywood film made in those decades would count since the cinema ideologically pits the individual against those adverse "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" as opposed to relevant socio-economic and historical circumstances. Is not NIXON another example of a blighted individual ruined by his personal demons and repressive mother despite his pathetic railings against a "system" the film never attempts either to appropriately understand or analyze? As the current issue of THE HUMANIST notes, 80s and 90s Hollywood is as John Hurt notes a cinema for children, not adults, reproducing individualist ego-psychology on the most infantile levels. In this sense, NIXON is another Oliver Stone adult "temper tantrum." ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message. Problems? Contact [log in to unmask]
