my documentary picks... nanook of the north is excellent because it reveals itself (as a narrative construct) in so many ways. frederick wiseman's ZOO - excellent because of the self-reflexivity - lots of shots of spectators with cameras videotaping animal activity...also great because, unlike most animal documentaries, it resists attempts at anthropomorphizing discourse that is characteristic of most animal documentaries. and something called "Marjo" - i think is the title - which follows the disaffection of a young - very young - evangelical from his evangelism...another self-reflexive documentary in which the film crew plays a narrative role.
