Next Spring I will be teaching a course in international film covering French and German cinema. Can anybody suggest two good books to use in the course, which will be attended by upper-division undergrads and grad students. I am covering - the silent period - German Expressionism - French avant-garde and industry pre-WWII - WWII productions - French New Wave - New German Cinema I like the scope of Roy Armes's _French Cinema_ book, but I think it has been out of print for some time. I haven't been able to find any other books which offer an introduction to the French and German cinema, overviewing the entirety of film history. I'm trying to avoid the use of more than two books and I don't really want to have to assemble a reader which requires a lot of copyright permissions. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
