RE: what departments teach cinema? Funny how many commenting on the Stavis/Frank debate have used the above title without responding to that question (and the territorial struggle over film studies between English, theater, and art). At my university undergrads can take film courses in theology, English, theater, and the interdisciplinary women's studies and honors programs. There is no film dept.; but the theater dept. has a film minor. Students taking a film course through as "theater" can use it to fulfill their general fine arts requirement. But they can't use other departments' film courses as a "fine arts" course. Are any of you in a similar situation, fighting for your right to teach film through a certain program and theoretical view, in competition with others? Does "reading" a film as "text" help to justify the study and teaching of film as "art"?
