On Cary Grant and nationality: Yes, he was British, but in Hollywood films he was as often as not cast as a specifically American character: see "Operation Petticoat," "Mr. Blandings," "To Catch a Thief," "Arsenic and Old Lace" (as a Brooklynite, no less!), etc. Grant's odd (is it English? American?) accent becomes a marker of his very specific persona in film -- see Tony Curtis' impersonation in "Some Like It Hot" (Jack Lemmon says: "Nobody talks like that!"). ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message.
