Okay -- it's time for me to hop on the bandwagon on this one.
I was born and raised in Malone, New York -- a sleepy town just south of the
Canadian border between the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Champlain.
Just six miles east of Malone is Burke, NY, the crossroads that marks the farm
upon which Alamanzo Wilder -- the man who married Laura Ingalls of
"Little House" fame. The farm there is a tourist site. In addition,
there is a well-documented authentic treatment of the story in Malone
that has been established by the Malone Historical Society.
The line drawings of Malone in the original book "Farmer Boy"
by Laura Ingalls Wilder are extremely accurate. Many of the buildings
pictured, including the Congregational Church, are still in excellent
repair and use today. The Franklin County Fair is still (as it was
then) one of the major events in the area each August.
