THESE THREE (1936) with Merle Oberon, Miriam Hopkins, Joel McCrea, and Bonita Granville. Very loosely based on Lillian Hellman's play THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. Nasty little rich girl Granville ruins the reputation of schoolteacher Oberon by claiming she saw McCrea coming out of Oberon's bedroom late at night. Also, William Wyler remade the picture in 1961 with Audrey Hepburn, Shirley Maclaine, and James Garner. The play's title and lesbian theme were reinstated. Personally, I prefer the earlier version. It is less dreary and Bonita Granville gives an excellent performance as the little girl. Does anybody know why Granville quit acting when she grew up? Mary Kalfatovic
