Its fascinating that BOAN raises such debate...it says alot about our lingering difficulties in dealing with race and racism in this culture. Anyway, first, my biggest problem with putting the onus of Hollywood's racist, sexist, classist etc treatment of individuals on the South is that it ignores dominant racist, classist, and sexist ideology of the larger culture. Second I would like to add a little bit more plot detail to the description of BOAN...mainly that the story is told as a sort of revisionist view of Reconstruction. In this telling, the Klan must save the south from the blacks who because of Reconstruction and being voted into office, are terrorizing whites and particularly white women. Whites in blackface portrayed this array of blacks who then were put down by the heroic Klan. Again, just my two cents. Dianne
