I would suggest that you look at E. Ann Kaplan's book, _Women in Film Noir_,
British Film Institute, 1978.

Yup. I have it-we used it in our film noir class here last spring, along with
"In A Lonely Street: Masculinity, Genre, and Film Noir" that book by Frank
(can't recall his last name at the moment) whose thesis is that FN functioned to
restore the "damage" done to American manhood by the war.
