In response to recent query (I think the name was Ari Kisiloff from Cornell), I would recommend highly the Merchant-Ivory movies (_Howard's End_ and _A Room with a View_ are recent offerings, if the name seems unfamiliar). They have made some gorgeous movies set in India. James Ivory (from California) directs, and Ismail Merchant (from India) produces. I can recall a couple of these movies offhand. I am sure there are more. 1. Heat and Dust (early 1980's I think). Features Greta Scacchi and Shashi Kapoor. Superb story set in the latter years of the British raj (rule) in India. 2. The Shakespearewallah (mid 70's). Jennifer Kendall and Shashi Kapoor. About a travelling English theater group's adventures in India. And of course, DAVID LEAN made _A Passage to India_ (based on the novel by E.M. Forster). All of David Lean's movies are wonderful (eg _Lawrence of Arabia_). This one should be easily available on video. Also, _The Jewel in the Crown_ was an excellent BBC TV series which was shown on PBS a few years ago. Also about the British Raj in India. These movies are all made from a western perspective. - Raman (EK0RXG1@NIU)
