----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Loyola University of Chicago The Department of Communication seeks four (4) colleagues to join us in Fall, 1992 on tenure-track appointments in an exciting urban university. Loyola University is a Jesuit institution comprised of people of many faiths and creeds. The Department of Communication is both popular and innovative in the complementary endeavors of teaching and research. Position #1: Cultural Studies: Develop/teach courses in critical analysis of media, communication institutions, and practices, including but not limited to journalism, advertising, public relations or government. The person may come from any of several approaches to this field, including the Birmingham School, the Cultivation Project, or others. Position #2: Ethnography of Communication: Develop/teach courses in cultural communication patterns, speech communities, intercultural or interracial communication. We welcome applications from people applying ethnographic perspectives to mass mediated and/or oral communication. Position #3: Discourse Analysis: Develop/teach courses in the analysis of discourse. The successful applicant may come from any of the traditions which foreground discourse as a way of dealing with important social issues, such as authority, conflict or community. Position #4: Media Studies: Develop/teach courses in media theory and criticism; supervise/teach courses in TV studio production. We particularly invite applications from people whose work focuses on the electronic media in the context of oral and print media, and who see media as a formative force in social processes. All positions are at the beginning or advanced assistant professor level. Qualifications include the Ph.D. or equivalent; evidence of exceptional promise or outstanding ability as teachers; and scholarly research and professional activity.
