Kathleen Rowe published a good, interesting piece on Roseanne Barr Arnold in SCREEN: "Roseanne: Unruly Woman as Domestic Goddess," 31:4 (Winter 1990): 408-419. I don't think your students would have too much trouble with it. She even uses frame enlargements to illustrate her argument. I think Roseanne is one of TV's most interesting figures, just because she represents so many things supposedly anathema to dominant ideology (working class, feminist, anti-baseball, overweight and still sexually active, etc. etc.) and yet she's the most popular TV comedian of the '90s. It's strange and fascinating. Good luck with your course. If you'd like I could send you lecture materials I used when I included her in a course of my own. ---------- Men are born ignorant, not stupid; they are made stupid by education. --Bertrand Russell-- ---------- | | BITNET : JBUTLER@UA1VM | | Jeremy G.
