Northeastern University Department of Communication Studies Announcement of Opening of two Assistant Professor Positions Grade 23, 2 Assistant Professors, Communication Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, Northeastern University, located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, invites applications for two tenure-track full-time assistant professor positions in the Department of Communication Studies, beginning Fall 2005. The Department of Communication Studies at Northeastern is an innovative, teaching and research department comprised of three concentrations: Media Studies, Organizational Communication and Public Communication. Its mission is to develop both its research and teaching in a way that advances critical thinking into practice and application. The two positions are designed to strengthen our concentrations in both media studies and public communication and are part of an ongoing growth and expansion of the faculty and Northeastern University's Academic Investment Plan. A graduate program in the area of Communication and Cultural Studies is proposed to be launched (subject to University approval) for the fall of 2005 and successful candidates would be expected to participate in the teaching and supervision of graduate students as part of their duties. Position One: Media History We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or the completion of the doctorate prior to commencing the position) whose research interests and teaching expertise address historical approaches to the media, which could include: historical development of the media, industrial constitution of the various media forms, or historical analysis of media texts or media movements. Position Two: Critical Communication Theory We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or completion of the doctorate prior to commencing the position) with research and teaching expertise that intersects with communication and cultural theory. Successful candidates should be able to teach courses in critical theory and research methods. We are particularly interested in candidates whose focus is on integrating theory with direct (and alternative) social practice. Other areas of teaching expertise may include political communication, rhetorical theory, discourse analysis, or global communication. Successful applicants will also have a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in higher education.
