I will happily second the recommendations for the excellent commentaries on the CITIZEN KANE and TABU DVDs (also there's much of interest in Criterion's FLOATING WEEDS/STORY OF FLOATING WEEDS package and TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE). For analysis of mise-en-scene, my favorite is Stephen Prince's marathon three-hour commentary on Criterion's RED BEARD. For nuts-and-bolts information about filmmaking, John Sayles's commentaries on SECRET OF ROAN INISH and SUNSHINE STATE are full of interesting advice about directorial problems (what to do when the floorboards at your location creak, for example, or how to maximize production values at no extra cost: shoot at public events like music festivals and big community picnics). Recommendations, please?
