Dear Scott and others, Lawrence Suid, a fine film scholar, has a new version of his classic GUTS AND GLORY out...It has been published the UP of Kentucky fairly recently. See the above volume for insights into the production of THE CAINE MUTINY and the Hollywood/DOD relations involved. As most people know, the film was Directed by Edward Dmytryk--who was set on proving his bona fides as a 200% American at the time. Suid's books are always great for their interviews and their basic research into the details surrounding the films--as well as the films themselves. As most people also know, the film deals with a major issue concerning "patriotism" and betrayal, a topic which was close to Dmytryk's situation. It was the kind of them which Elia Kazan dealt with in a like fashion through his film _On the Waterfront_. This latter production is wonderfully covered in Ken Hey's article in HOLLYWOOD AS HISTORIAN (also UP of Kentucky, 2nd Ed., 1998). These struggles were agons of the Cold War. The first reel of the film is a paean to Navy hardware and Navy life....it is a bit hard to take after a while, esp. if you belonged to a rival military branch. ::]] Good luck on your project!
