Call for Papers: ‘The Working-Class in Canadian Film’ An anthology of essays edited by Malek Khouri (University of Calgary) and Darrell Varga (York University) to be published by a Canadian University Press. This book brings together recent scholarship on the representation of class in Canadian film studies and encourages debate over the privileging of nationalism in Canadian film criticism. We invite analysis of the representation and negotiation of class and specifically labour in films/videos, within specific moments in Canadian film history, by specific directors and movements, and through institutional practices in the areas of feature film, television, documentary, and independent (short/experimental) film/video. The collection shall include work of a critical, historical, and theoretical focus. We especially invite essays which negotiate the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality with respect to class. The scope of this book is interdisciplinary and is intended to be of interest to scholars and students of film, media, cultural studies, and history, as well as activists. Essays should not exceed 10,000 words. First draft of the paper should be sent by October 1, 2001. Please send a 500 words proposal of your essay by July 15, 2001. Manuscript format: -All papers should be in either Word or Word Perfect. -Please use a 12 point Times Roman font. -Notes should be formatted as endnotes beginning on a new page at the end of each essay. -Notes should be the same font and size as the rest of the text. -Citations are to be listed in consecutively numbered endnotes, following the University of Chicago Manual of Style -Titles of films and videos shall be in italics and identified (in parentheses) by year of release and name of director. -Source and availability of films/videos must be indicated on an separate page, including contact info for the distributor. -All papers must be double-spaced throughout, including block quotes and notes.
