i have written briefly on HEAVEN'S GATE in an essay called ON THE MCMOVIE
about high concept big bloated movies; it appears in SCREEN MEMORIES:
HOLLYWOOD CINEMA ON THE PSYCHOANALYTIC COUCH Columbia University Press l993
The film has acquired an underground reputation especially in France but
is not generally well thought about here I belong to a film studies group
and will post a question about scholarly articles if you don't hear from me
don't assume there aren't any because Ive been having trouble with my server
there

I disliked the film intensely having seen it during its original uncut
release then its rerelease cut and also on video film is intriguing in
that it managed to take down an entire studio because of the ongoing fear of
interfering with a young unseasoned and thoroughly arrogant director
Cimino to this day remains unrepentent same phenonenon nearly happened
with Hopper and THE LAST MOVIE an infinitely better although deeply flawed
film
