E.T. is an obvious choice - I think it heralded the science-belief theme
evident in subsequent SF films like Contact.

For technology/humanism (not sure if that comes into religion or magic at
all), Robocop and Terminator make an interesting complement.  The first
sees a cyborg stripped of its mechanical exterior to reveal the human
inside; the second features a robot stripped of its human exterior to
reveal the mechanical skeleton.  Both examine the theme of 'the ghost in
the machine' - which I guess is very relevant to the science/religion theme.
