Folks I need those of you disgusted with the AFI 100 greatest film list to
E mail me directly if you are willing to go ON RECORD. Unfortunately many
people in the film business as well as archivists are justifiably afraid to
say anything publically for fear of offending studio people and most
journalists are only getting one side. So if you want to talk send me a
note and if you want to see that list of AFI's greatest films ( Jerry
Maguire, Love Story and of course Pretty Women) just check their Web site.

For those of you you just can't wait for the AFI to announce the " actual"
100 greatest from that list of 400, may not have to wait until they are
"revealed" in the TV special tuesday. You can always try calling a studio
since they have already been told which of their films "won". After all the
promotion starts
wensday. Time/ Warner has gotten 56% of the 100 greatest films according to
Entertainment Weekly.

Incidently the AFI has told the press that documentaries are not included
because they are only doing " dramatic" films. Guess I missed this in the
small print. All of the advertising & promotial calls this list " THE 100
GREATEST AMERICAN FILMS". However by the AFI's own rules this list includes
only films that are A On Video. B Not Documentaries. C chosen for ANY ONE
of the following criteria, artistic merit, popularity, cultural signicance,
award ( Oscar) winner. D was selected by a blue ribbon panel whose
membership is secret and last but not least, the film is owned by one of
the companies paying for the promotion.

If studios & video stores want to promote the sale of " great films" they
are free to do so but the AFI is telling the public that these are the 100
GREATEST FILMS and I sincerely doubt they will be emphasizing the above
criteria particularly the one about paid promotion. This list has as much
merit as the
Blockbuster Movie awards but it will get a lot more serious attention

AS always views expressed are my own cranky opinions
