Reading this reminded me of one of the original Cracker stories - ie
those made in the UK. In that story a black british man, who is also
one of the major suspects of the crime, does not like to let his
lower body be visible and had as a child attempted to bleach his skin
white. This aspect of his life comes out during the police
investigation, I can't remember whther he tells the story or whther
his mother does. I think this was from the second series, definitely
not the first, and might have been towards the end of it, though I
don't remeber that well. It would have been broadcast in the UK
1995ish. I think these have also been aired in the US but I don't
know the timing for that.
