While I'd forgotten that All My Children had a lesbian character in the
80's, you might also want to know that there are currently two gay regular
characters and two other occasional ones:

Kevin--a college student. This is an elaborate storyline over the last
two years. But to sum it up, his older brother is in prison for a murder
which occurred when Kevin came out on a talk show and his brother went ape
and tried to kill Kevin's supportive, openly gay high school history
teacher but missed and killed the teacher's sister instead (see below).
After this storyline, Kevin tried to reconcile with his wealthy but
neglectful parents, but only managed to work things out with his mother,
who left his father over it. Kevin also went through a period when he
tried to be straight, including going to one of those "recovery"
therapists, but finally is comfortable with his homosexuality. This whole
thing was handled very well by the writers: not sugary and not condemning
or self-righteous. He was confused, and coming out was hard, but now he's
even dating.

Waiter--interested in Kevin and went out with him on at least one date.
Kevin's first gay sexual experience.

Mike--high school history teacher (with Ph.D.). Faced prejudice and an
attempt to get him fired when he came out, but he persisted and kept his
job. Also faced resistance from his brother-in-law, who eventually came
around and is now a close and supportive friend. His supportive sister was
killed, as described above. Has recently had a much more minor role on the
show, but pops up occasionally. Has a long-term partner, Brad, a doctor.

Brad--a doctor and Mike's long-term partner. Hasn't been on the show in
awhile.
