I've studied a good deal on Agnes Varda, and might be able to help you a
bit. Chantal Ackerman of Belgium is best known for her French film,
_Night and Day_ and her American film _A Couch in New York_. There is
also Asia Argento, younger daughter of Dario Argento, who collaborated
with many youthful filmmakers on _DeGenerizione_, and Rumiko Takahashi who
does anime work for film, video and televison, best known for _Ranma 1/2_.
These are a few ideas, but there are many others, and I only scratch the
surface with those that come instantly to mind.
