Origin and Objectives
The Political Film Society was formed in 1986 to recognize outstanding
achievement in raising political consciousness. The Society gives awards each
year to filmmakers who present penetrating political analyses that inform the
public about politics. The Society also supports the use of films for
educational purposes and encourages the academic analysis of political films.
The Society is an independent, nonprofit project at the University of
Hawai`i.
Film Awards
The Society votes on awards each year in the following categories:
democracy
exposé
Hawai`i (if a film is available)
human rights
peace.
Eligible films include those that begin runs for at least one week in a
commercial cinema in the Society's headquarters city (Honolulu). Films may be
short subjects or feature films but exclude documentaries and television
films; films that initially appear for sale at commercial video stores each
year are also eligible for consideration. Members nominate and select the
best films each year by mail ballot.
HIFF Awards
In addition, the Society gives an award for the best political film at the
annual Hawai`i International Film Festival (HIFF), which occurs each
November. The HIFF award is an any area of political concern, including but
not limited to the five categories delineated above.

Working Paper Series.
Newsletter
The Political Film Society Newsletter, published at six-week intervals,
contains news about activities of the Society, including recently nominated
films, the latest additions to the Syllabus Series and the Working Paper
Series, and the ballot for voting to select the best political films each
year. Subscriptions are free to PFS members with fax numbers and E-Mail
addresses; otherwise, the yearly cost is $5.00, payable to "University of

Syllabus Series
The Political Film Society encourages the use of political film in
educational institutions. Accordingly, several college instructors have
contributed to the Society's Syllabus Series:

APSA Linkage
In 1995, the American Political Science Association recognized the Political
Film Society as a Related Group. The Political Film Society has sponsored
panels at meetings of the Association.

The Political Film Society has members throughout the United States. The
