The 10th Annual Society for Animation Studies Conference and International
Symposium will be held at Chapman University, in Orange, California, 6 - 16
August 1998. The event will feature workshops, panels, screenings,
demonstrations, scholarly papers, archive tours and other events covering a
full-spectrum of animation- and motion-picture-related topics.

This year's conference theme is "In the Beginning . . .," placing a focus
on the way in which individuals and institutions got started. Preliminary
plans include screenings of home movies from the animation community and a
panel on preservation organized by leading animation scholars.

A call for presentation proposals is now being distributed. Preference
will be given to proposals dealing with the conference theme, including
student works of now accomplished artists; the first years of particular
studios, schools, and organizations; and prototypes of computer or other
animation-related technologies. In addition, home movies or slides related
to the 'personal side' of the animation community are requested.

Proposals should include a 25-50 word summary of the presentation suitable
for publication, as well as a 250-500 word abstract. Also include phone,
fax and e-mail contact information. The final call for papers,
pre-constituted panels and workshops deadline is 15 January 1998. An early
decision deadline of 1 November 1997 has been established; decisions on
proposals received by that date will be made within two weeks, to assist
attendees with securing travel assistance from their employers.

Some financial assistance may be available to help students and the
underemployed whose work is accepted for presentation at the conference.
If you are interested in applying for this assistance, please write a
letter of application and send it with your proposal by the early
appication deadline, 1 November 1997.
