                       Update of Available Awards:
                      1998-99 U.S. Scholar Program
 
The deadline for regular Fulbright scholar lecturing and research awards for
Americans going abroad in 1998-99 was August 1, 1997.
 
CIES is accepting late applications only for the 1998-99 awards.
 
The availability of individual awards will change as applications are
submitted, and opportunities within countries and regions may close at any
time. Please confirm the status of the awards that interest you before
proceeding or completing the application materials.
 
Final decision as to the number of awards and availability of specific
openings is subject to funding considerations and approval by the United
States Information Agency and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship
Board.
 
Lecturing assignments are in English, unless otherwise noted.

Eligibility
 
o U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application. Status as a
  permanent resident is not sufficient.
 
o A doctorate is required at the time of application, unless otherwise noted.
  In fields such as TEFL, the performing or creative arts, etc., the
  appropriate terminal degree may be acceptable. For professionals outside
  academe, comparable experience and recognized professional standing are
  expected. Consult individual award descriptions.
 
o Proficiency in a foreign language is required for some awards, as noted in
  the award description.
 
 
Award Benefits
 
Award benefits vary by country and type of award. Grants range in duration
from two months to the full academic year. Benefits may include:
 
o Monthly stipend.
 
o Round-trip travel for the grantee. In many countries, travel for up to two
  dependents for semester and/or academic-year awards.
 
o Housing or housing allowance in many countries.
 
o Subsistence or living allowance in many countries.
 
o Tuition allowance in some countries.

Booklet for the specific grant provisions that apply.
 
Sabbatical, leave-of-absence, or retirement pay may be used concurrently with
Fulbright support.
