A good study concerning Barbie is Erica Rand's _Barbie's Queer Accesories_
published by Duke a few years back.  Also you may want to consider
episodes of _The Simpsons_ in which Lisa's problematic relationship to the
Malibu Stacy doll (an obvious Barbie stand-in) takes center stage.  Also
interesting about these episodes is the identification of Waylon Smithers
as the President of the Malibu Stacey Fan Club.  Given the entire "is he
or isn't he gay" trope that the show employs, this an interesting
intertextual reference.  Good Luck!
