RE: underground escape films:
 
One of the more interesting, and authentic, is THE TUNNEL, a CBS(?) documentary
from the 1960s.  Piers Anderton(?sp) was the correspondent.  They filmed the
digging of a tunnel from East to West Berlin, as I recall, and the escape of a
number of E. German residents.  I imagine a good
history of the documentary would have a description; try Wm. Bluem's
DOCUMENTARY IN AMERICAN TELEVISION (my copy's in storage).
