The dead friend in "The Big Chill" (I can't remember his name) is an important
unseen character.   He is only seen (partially) in the opening credits, but it
is his death that is the catalyst for the rest of the movie.
 
(Trivia bit:  Didn't Kevin Costner play him and then get edited out?)
