CALL FOR PAPERS

     The Journal of Popular Film and Television is calling for contributions
to a special issue on "Cinematic/Televisual Representations of Violence and
Aggression", to be published in Spring, l998. Papers addressing a broad
spectrum of socio-cultural
issues relevant to the theme will be considered:

     Possible topics include: Representations of violence throughout
cinema/TV history in various genres, nationalities, et cetera; violence,
aggression, and the vulnerable body; censorship issues; the redemptive,
artistically/aesthetically "useful" representation of violence vs. the
gratuitous show of aggression (is the distinction valid? Who is empowered to
make it, and why?); the shifting horizon of audience reception to displays of
violence; verbal aggression on the Internet ("cyberviolence"); "hardcore"
direct-to-video sadistic cinema and its relationship to hardcore pornography.

     Submissions should be no longer than 20 pages, conforming to the MLA
Style Manual, double spaced, with disc if possible (PC format please). Send
three copies (with SSA if return is desired) to: Harvey Roy Greenberg, MD;
320 West 86th Street, Apartment 3A; New York City, NY l0024-3l39, by l
October l997.
