Transgendered Media;
 
Recently, transgender studies has made its way into the academy as an
area of study. What are its connections to cultural studies, gender
studies, queer theory, social activism, studies in human sexuality and
medical discourse and technology? How is this new field of inquiry taken
up within the discipline of media studies? How might trasgender
articulations be dependent upon the convergence of emerging genders and
media technologies? Reconceptualizing media technology and gender in
this age of convergence seeems to be crucial to the discussion of
transgender. Transgender studies may indeed be about developing
discourses around new media, new bodies and embodiments, forms, spaces,
interfaces . . . .
 
Submissions might address questions of representation of transgendered
people and production of transgender media. Topics include, but are in
no way limited to: (trans) gender in cyberspace * cybersex/phone sex *
interface theory * gender b(l)ending * cross gender identification and
spectatorship * phallic woman and "deadly dolls" * Hollywood
crossdressing * tomboys and family tv * new arts/new genders *
transgender activism and alternative technologies.
 
The Austin editors of The Velvet Light Trap are also planning a future
issue on: Film and Video Festivals.
 
Approaches to this subject can be various. We welcome papers from film
and video makers as well as from film and video scholars, and embrace
the prospect of an eclectic mix of submissioon.
 
Possible topics: women's film festivals and feminist praxis * the impact
of film festivals on film canons * Cannes and post-war Europe * queer
film and video- beyond the ghetto * festivals, the independents, and
Hollywood * video festivals and television * festivals and "Third World"
cinema * reframing diasporic cinema * showcasing multi-media * festivals
as a social event * the politics of jury prizes * festivals and film and
video distribution * the history of festivals.
 
Deadline for submissions is February 15, 1997.
