 "THE UNCANNY"

 

 Para*doxa is seeking essays for an issue on "The Uncanny."  The

 issue will be guest edited by Michael Arnzen, Department of English,

 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR  97403 <[log in to unmask]>.

 

 Freud's essay on psychological terror and the arts, "The Uncanny"

 (das Unheimliche), is a landmark text in critical and

 psychoanalytical approaches to literature and media. While the

 "Uncanny" has often been discussed in relation to gothic and horror

 literature, Para*doxa is soliciting theoretically-informed essays

 which extend these analyses and explore the Uncanny's manifestation

 in popular culture at-large.

 

 We are generally looking for appraisals and revisions of the

 Freudian "Uncanny" as a theoretical approach to contemporary popular

 literature and the media and will entertain a variety of views and

 schools of thought. Essayists should not, therefore, limit their

 scope to theoretical discourse or to psychoanalytical perspectives.

 We prefer applied theoretical discussions -- essays which are written

 in clear language, emphasizing the primary text(s) and genres under

 discussion. While discussions of horror texts -- especially those

 since 1945 -- are certainly welcome, we are seeking original

 applications of theories of "The Uncanny" to a broad range of popular

 genres, including (but not limited to): children's literature and

 fairy tales, science fiction and fantasy literature, popular film and

 television genres, animation and comics, electronic hypertext and the

 Internet, advertising and political discourse, and so on.

 

 Essays normally range from 5000 to 6500 words.  The deadline for

 submissions is May 1, 1997.

 

 

 INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS

 

 The following "Information for Contributors" is taken from the

 inside back cover of the journal Para*doxa:

 

 Para*doxa invites contributions on all aspects of genre literature

 (written, oral, drawn or designed) which make a significant and

 original contribution to the study of those genres.

 

 Articles may be submitted in English, French or other languages, but

 will normally be published in English. While acceptance of a

 contribution may be based on an evaluation of the ms. in its original

 language, a satisfactory translation of the accepted ms. into English

 is the author's responsibility. Manuscripts should not normally

 exceed 6,500 words. Style must conform generally to the MLA Style

 Manual (1985). Para*doxa will regularize individual variations in

 style. Foreign language quotes must be accompanied by glosses, i.e.,

 translations into English in brackets. Authors must obtain written

 permission for quoting unpublished or published material in excess of

 fair use. In accordance with the journal's policy of blind

 submission, the author's name and institution should appear only on

 the title page. A one or two paragraph abstract on a separate sheet

 of paper should precede the main body of the article. Upon

 acceptance, authors of articles and book reviews are requested to

 supply a final, clean copy on disk (Word or Word Perfect preferred).

 Authors will receive proofs which must be corrected and returned

 within forty-eight hours of receipt. No new material may be inserted

 in the text at the proofreading stage. Upon publication, authors

 receive 3 copies of the issue in which their work appears. Authors

 whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication warrant: (1)

 that the ms. has not been published elsewhere in English, and that

 the ms. will not be published elsewhere in English until after

 publication in Para*doxa; (2) that Para*doxa will be held financially

 blameless, and that the author will be financially responsible for

 any legal action taken against Para*doxa as a result of publishing

 the author's contribution; (3) that Para*doxa retains the right to

 republish the manuscript in any issue or reissue of Para*doxa or in

 any anthology published by Para*doxa and; (4) that in any

 republication, the author will acknowledge its first publication in

 Para*doxa. All other rights are released to the author.

 The contents of Para*doxa are listed in the MLA International

 Bibliography, the American Humanities Index, and the Gale Directory

 of Publications and Broadcast Media. In 1995, Para*doxa was awarded

 2nd runner-up for "Best New Journal of the Year" by the CELJ (Council

 of Editors of Learned Journals). This December (1996), Para*doxa has

 been invited to send a representative to the "Roundtable on Science

 Fiction, Fantasy, and Utopia:  A Panel of Editors and Heads of

 Professional Organizations" at the MLA's annual convention in
