CHANCE 3 DAYS IN THE DESERT
November 8-10, 1996

Starring JEAN BAUDRILLARD and ALLUCQU=C8RE ROSANNE STONE

CHANCE is a philosophical rave and summit meeting between artists and
philosophers, chaosophists and croupiers, mathematicians and musicians at
Whiskey Pete's Casino in the Nevada desert. A CHANCE to redefine this
century's romance with randomness and synchronicity less innocently for our
era.

CHANCE is:
Three days of chance encounters, gambling and deep thought with Jean
Baudrillard, Allucqu=E8re Rosanne Stone and 30 other internationally active
cultural strategists ... music from the San Francisco bands Towel and
Ohm-a-Revelator... DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid... a one-time mystery jam
between six special guest star musicians with Red Krayola lead guitarist
Tom Watson... Financial Collapse - a talk by Wall Street chaos trader
Douglas Hepworth ... Calvin Meyers of the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians on
the phantom desert... a roving fun-house of installation art and
readings... Hong Kong artist Shirley Tse on postcolonial mutation and the
aesthetics of fastfood...The Rules of the Game with Las Vegas Gambling
Academy Director Nick Kallos...Chance & Cut-Ups - a writing workshop with
Diane di Prima... the intensely nameless beauty of Oguri & Renzoku butoh...

"Chance is a special effect that redeems the paradoxical nature of our
lives." -- Jean Baudrillard

About the HEADLINERS:

Jean Baudrillard 'is the most important and original French thinker of the
past twenty years.' (J.G. Ballard) Tongue-in-cheek,iconoclastic,
ruthlessly cultivating paradox at the expense of any established truth,
he's managed to radically upset our relation to the world and to thinking.
Although for a number of years he has exerted 'a virtual hegemony in the
American artworld' (New Art Examiner) Baudrillard never deviated from his
own course, deceiving fans and adversaries alike, challenging every single
paradigm in order to short-circuit contemporary reality. Gambler of
concepts and poet of ideas, Baudrillard is the ultimate agent provocateur,
the exterminating angel of theory and yet its ultimate practitioner.

Allucqu=E8re Rosanne (Sandy) Stone is one of the world's leading
theoreticians of technology and the transhuman. Stressing the interface
between the conscious body and technology at the end of the mechanical age,
her work has greatly advanced contemporary discourses of cyberspace, gender
and identity. Writing in Artforum, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve has noted that
Stone's work "is one extended autobiographical performance ...it breathes
of our technologically vibrant era. [For Stone] virtuality is ...
practice, possibility, performativity, and most delicately, life." Stone
is the author of The War of Desire and Technology at the Close of the
Mechanical Age (MIT Press, 1995). She is the director of the Advanced
Communications Technology Laboratory (ACTLAB) at the University of Texas
where she teaches in the Department of Radio-TV-Film.
